"She had transitioned less than two weeks prior. I was lying there next to him watching his grief; the grief that couldn't be hidden in his sleep. I noticed I was holding back. Somehow afraid of doing the wrong thing - how do you comfort someone who has lost someone they had spent half their life with? But I let my hand do what it wanted and put it on his arm, and he moved closer and let me hold him. We laid there like that for a while. I said, "I wish I could stay forever." He said, "Forever?" I lied, and said, "Well, for a couple of more days." I wanted to take his grief away, and knew that I couldn't. My job was to witness and hold, and allow him his journey. And return to my own."
